4. Presentation by Gary, WA6TQJ, on his experiences with the San Diego Wild Fires
Gary gave an excellent presentation about his role as a red Cross volunteer dispatched to the San Diego Wild fires. When he got to San Diego, he was processed. He was sent to work shelters, but at that time they didn’t have an assignment for him. He was tapped for his ham expertise, and then sent to a shelter near the border with Mexico. By Wednesday, when the National Red Cross was activated, there was no need for Ham radio. Ham radios were used for the first four days.
Gary was then moved to Red Cross Resource Technology, where he was involved in setting up Red Cross satellite dishes, networks, and running cables from routers to create the Red Cross networks necessary for their logistics and other tasks.
He noted that after four days, ARES and Ham radio didn’t really fit in after national moved in. This was a topic of discussion down there. Gary also mentioned that the WinSystem of Repeaters was dedicated severalof their reapters to support hams in the field during the wildfires! (Thank you Shorty, K6JSI,!)
5. Go Kit Presentation by Bill, K6KN
Bill, K6KN, gave a great presentation on his “Radio Go Kit”that he took to Hurricane Katrina. With his well supplied kit, he can cover ALL bands from HF to 2 meters 440.
MixW. This interface allows him to control his rig, work with CW, packet and more.
He noted that eBay is a good place to buy the digital interface. Called Rig Expert and made by the same guys to make MixW.

He also showed a Roll up HF antenna:

Bill, had every base covered in his presentation. It was great to see that you can get so much power and flexibility in a rather small box!
